How it works

  1. Pick a plan. You set up the own domain plan yourself in a few minutes. For Business, ask us for a quote.
  2. Add a few DNS records. The portal shows exactly which ones and checks them. We take care of the certificates.
  3. Create the accounts. Do it in the domain portal. On Business you can also connect your LDAP or Active Directory.
  4. Install an app. For example Conversations on Android or Monal on iPhone and Mac. On Windows and Linux, Gajim works well.

Host XMPP yourself or let us do it?

You can run an XMPP server yourself: ejabberd and Prosody are both free and open source. But a server your team relies on takes more than an install:

  • DNS records (SRV) and TLS certificates that renew on time
  • A TURN server, so voice and video calls work behind firewalls and NAT
  • Security updates and monitoring
  • Settings for file uploads, message history and push notifications on phones

With OpenIM we take care of all that. On the own domain plan it runs on our servers. On Business we can also set it up and maintain it on your own infrastructure, so your data never leaves your network.

An alternative to WhatsApp, Teams and Slack

With WhatsApp everyone needs a phone number. Your company has no control over the accounts. Teams and Slack are closed platforms: your chats live in their cloud and only work with their apps.

XMPP works differently. The addresses are on your domain, so they belong to your company. You choose where the data is stored. And because it's an open standard, you can chat with people on other XMPP servers and switch providers whenever you want.

Frequently asked questions

XMPP (also called Jabber) is an open standard for chat, in use since 1999. It works like email: every company can have its own server and domain. People on different servers can still message each other. Group chats, file sharing, voice and video calls and end-to-end encryption (OMEMO) are all built in.

No. We host the XMPP server for you and take care of updates, TURN relays and certificates. Does your data have to stay in your own network? With Business we can also run the server on your own infrastructure.

Yes, on the Business plan, if you want it. People then sign in with the username and password they already use. The contact list is filled from your directory. Without LDAP you manage the accounts in the domain portal.

Any XMPP app. We recommend Conversations on Android and Monal on iPhone, iPad and Mac. On Windows and Linux, Gajim works well. They are all free and open source.

Yes. OpenIM is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce and works under Dutch law. Our servers are in the European Union or on-premise at your own location. We store as little as we can. On the Business plan we sign a data processing agreement with you. See the privacy page for details.

The own domain plan is €60 a year per domain, for up to 10 accounts. Business starts at €100 a month, depending on the number of users and what you need. Ask us for a quote.
